Annual spring event – field burning or “aze yaki”

It’s the spring budding season! Warm days and cold days are repeated during this period preparing for flower blooming season to come.  In this season, an annual event of field burning is held in the region.  It’s called “aze yaki” in Japanese.

Field burning is done for removing weeds and preventing diseases of crops such as rice and vegetables. It is only allowed on a permissive day (once a year) under supervision of local fire brigade.

Scenery of fires and grass burning smell spreading over the field is another symbolic landscape in mountain village of spring Miyama.
