Kyoto's village culture

Ashiu forest

Miyama is home to the largest expanse of primary forest in western Japan. Owned by the University of Kyoto, this is one of very few areas that escaped the large-scale logging and forestry which has decimated most of Japan’s mountainous forests. Ashiu is home to many rare plants and wild animals, including Asian brown bears, so booking in advance with a local guide is a requirement. Ashiu is a pristine wilderness and a wonderful place for hiking and nature enthusiasts. If you would like to visit Ashiu, please book here in advance.
